“The moral choice is to do everything possible to establish a ceasefire and turn it into a lasting ceasefire and eventually peace in the region, including Lebanon,” he said on Sunday morning. “Canada will do everything it can to support that.”

Kearney added that this includes supporting the reduction of threats from Iran and its proxies against its regional neighbors, as well as its nuclear threat.

Iran wanted the ceasefire agreement to include an end to hostilities in Lebanon, where Israel has pushed its incursion deeper than at any time in a quarter-century as it targets Hezbollah. Tehran also said it was seeking the release of billions of dollars in frozen funds.

Tehran’s missile program and support for armed proxy groups in the region such as Hezbollah were among the stated goals of the US and Israel when they launched the war on February 28. The conflict began with strikes that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Khamenei’s son became the new supreme leader of Iran, although he has not appeared in public since the beginning of the war. His approval was necessary for Iran to sign the peace agreement.

Trump has already faced criticism of the deal even before it was announced, including from some members of his own Republican Party. Some politicians have said the proposed agreement does not improve the terms of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal signed under former President Barack Obama, which Trump abandoned during his first term.

The Iranian government also warned hours before the deal was announced that any split in the country over the deal would weaken its negotiating position.
