The defining image of the match took place in the 22nd over of Afghanistan’s innings. Left hand cover Tough Duby operated in the middle of an impressive spell, playing a narrow length to stifle the lower order. In the fourth delivery of the over, Dubey bowled a slow delivery behind, spinning sharply away from the off stump.
Desperately trying to break the shackles and find the border, the sub-par Afghan fighter Allah Ghazanfar threw his bat at him, trying to hit hard across the cover area. However, the lack of pace completely fooled Ghazanfar. The ball caught a fine edge high on the bat, sending it looping towards the slips.
Placed in the slip, Gill displayed lightning reflexes and extraordinary athleticism. As the ball bounced away from him, Gill threw his body to the side with his left arm well above his shoulder as he fell backwards. He gently plucked the ball out of the air and cradled it safely as it tumbled to the turf. Realizing he had performed an absolute world-class screamer, Gill stood up with a big smile, surrounded by his ecstatic teammates. Ghazanfar was sent to collect two balls, leaving Afghanistan reeling at 182/8 as Dhabi celebrated his third wicket of the afternoon.

India cruise past Afghanistan in the first ODI
Chasing a target of 195 runs, India managed the chase with supreme composure. Earlier in the day, a sensational, blistering century in the opening test Rahmanula Gurbazwho scored 102 off just 51 innings, including 8 fours and 8 sixes, threatened to take the game away from the hosts. However, the Indian players played brilliantly. Tough Duby finished with impressive figures of 3/47, while Gurnur Brar broke the tail to register 3/27, bowling out Afghanistan for 194 in 24.5 overs.
India’s reply was anchored by a master class from man of the match Gill. After Rohit Sharma failed to end on 16, Gill took complete control of the stadium. Showing no signs of fatigue from his brilliant fielding, he effortlessly anchored the innings with an unbeaten 84 off 66 balls, smashing 11 elegant fours and a huge six.
Useful contributions from Ishan Kishanwho made a blistering 34 off 22 balls and an explosive finish from KL Rahul (39* off just 19 balls) ensured that India faced no major problems. Despite the tight bowling spells with Rashid Khan (1/37) and Zyaur Rahman (1/39), India reached the target of 195 runs in 22.5 overs, finishing on 195/3 to secure a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
