Kell Brook sums up Conor Benn’s chances of beating Ryan Garcia for his first world title
Former IBF World Middleweight Champion, Kell Brookpreviously called to remove the internal dust from Conor Ben. Now “Special K” has predicted how Ben will fight for his first world title against WBC title holder Ryan Garcia.
Ben and Brooke were linked with a bout in May 2023 when the pair came apart in a ringside confrontation in Dublinbut the fight never happened, in part because Ben surrendered his BBBofC license after the infamous failed drug test.
Instead, Ben fought twice in the US at super-middleweight and then boxed twice with fierce rival Chris Eubank Jay at middleweight before announcing plans to return to middleweight and compete for world honours.
Back at 147lbs, Ben stepped into the ring against Regis Progress earlier this year in a 150lb bantamweight contest and was unhappy but still got his title shot, the fight against Garcia is now officially confirmed.
Speaking at St Fight Your Corner PodcastKell Brook was looking forward to the fight and admitted that while he gives Benn “a good chance”, he feels Garcia’s strength means the Californian’s victory is more likely.
“I give him (Ben) a good chance, but I’m leaning towards Garcia winning the fight, I do. In his last fight, he boxed well, but in the fight before, he didn’t box that well. I just think he’s going to be on top, they’re champions, and I think we’re going to see the best of both of them.
“I just think Garcia has a get-out-of-jail-free card. When I was boxing with Sean Porter, I went to Vegas to finish sparring, and I was sparring with some good kids. I put it on that kid and got a really good sparring, I hit hard.
“After we had something to eat, I said who’s the biggest puncher you’ve ever had, remember I’m a lot older than Garcia, and he said, ‘I’ve never been hit as hard as Ryan Garcia.’ The punching power he has, that push (is impressive).”
Garcia-Benn takes place on Saturday, September 12 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and is expected to feature undefeated heavyweight Jai Apetaya on the undercard.
