Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is entering another phase as the club ditches one long-term target and looks at several alternatives before the transfer window closes.
Michael Carrick has already added Youri Tielemans and Andrej Santos, but United still want a third midfielder who can offer defensive strength, athleticism and the ability to carry the ball through pressing.
This profile is important because the team already has players who are comfortable on the ball.
What is missing is someone who can defend the defense, win duels and lead the team forward.
United appear determined to assess the market carefully rather than rushing into yet another expensive deal.
Man United rule out a return to their previous goal
According to Fabrizio Romano on YouTubeManchester United will not renew their pursuit of Ederson, with Roma midfielder Manu Kone one of several players being assessed.

As for Manchester United’s midfield, I can confirm the appreciation for Roma’s Manu Kone, but he is not the only one. They have had contact with agents but no bid for Roma, no contact between the clubs yet. Man Utd are looking at options.”
Romano also explained which midfielder United want:
“Now it’s about choosing a third midfielder. Defensive, physical, who can break lines, who can be an important player in that sense. Manchester United are studying the market.”
The Red Devils need to spend carefully in the market
The update suggests that United are more selective than reports of a quick deal might imply.
Guardian also reported that Carrick is keen on Kone, Alex Scott and Eduardo Kamavinga, although their asking prices could complicate any move.
Kone looks the logical option because of his power, possession and defensive energy, but United must avoid paying an inflated fee simply because Ederson’s option is gone.
Tielemans can manage games, while Santos brings youth and technical quality; the next addition should complement their strengths, not duplicate them.
Expanding the shortlist makes sense. The smartest signing won’t necessarily be the most famous, but a midfielder who gives Carrick tactical flexibility and makes United harder to play.
