PS Swarva floor lamp
“Some things I made myself, like this one Svarva lamp we did with the design team Front for the PS 2009 collection. They were created very recently, so we made an armchair and this lamp. The desire was to make a turned wooden lamp, but you still need to be able to twist it, formulate it.”
“I felt that it would be very difficult to do. I went to Hungary with a lighting colleague at the time to the factory that made the lamps for us. They made all the metal tubes, so we were a little hesitant if they could solve the problem. But they made some mock-ups based on the design drawings. So we went there to have a look, and there it was. It was this floor lamp, and also table lamp where the wooden beads went in a circle and then up like a snake.’
“What we didn’t know was that next door to the lamp factory was this factory that made turned wooden beads, little individual pieces that we put together. None of us knew that. It was just a coincidence. So they were spinning these wooden beads and the lamp factory was putting them on metal tubes like necklaces. They had very little to do, so they were happy to get the business.”
Office of PS Sinka
“I have another favorite from this PS 2009 collection, it’s in my hallway PS Sinkawith small wooden base boxes. Sinka means ‘dovetail’ in Swedish, so the name explains the design.”
“But the problem we had with this package was that the volume of the package was too big. So we made each drawer a little bit smaller. So four drawers fold into each other. And four more drawers fold. There’s a little stopper in the back when you push them so they stop evenly in the front. There’s also a hidden compartment behind the smallest drawer. Really good drawers for of all these things that just lie there and get there In the upper one I have all the keys that I no longer know where they are divided.
PS Jonsberg Vases
“I have this vase from the PS collection to hold the cables (on my Samsung Serif TV). It was a set Jonsberg vases Hella Yongerius. There were four of them in different pottery techniques. I had all four, but the terracotta one broke, too bad.” (It definitely is. These $39 vases are on sale now used for $1700 for a complete set.)
“They’re inspired by different regions, and the different techniques are beautiful. I’m using a big black one for the toilet paper in one bathroom. That’s no disrespect to the design. It’s just such a good design to stand there, and it makes the bathroom look nice, and you can put the toilet paper in it. So why have something like an ugly stick? It’s good for that.”
Pax cabinets
“Pax. We have to mention Pax. I did Pax cabinets in several rooms, but I’m also a little peculiar. As with the kitchen, these veneer doors were sanded and hand painted by me to match my home, my space. Sometimes I repaint them.”
Crack Pepper Mills
“I have these pepper mills. One for white pepper, one for black pepper. This was also in the PS collection. We did it with Markus Arvonen. These pepper mills are beautiful and they have been around for about 20 years too. They are quite tall. A smaller version came later, but I like these.’
“They have their quirks, yes, but that only makes them more beautiful. It’s age. They’ve been around and used every day. Everything has a little bit of imperfection. You can spend your whole life on it, but in life there’s got to be some imperfection. Fix it? Then fix something else. It just moves. Leave it, be proud.”
Where is Billy’s or Kalax’s bookcase?
“I don’t have a Billy at home now. But there were! Calax? I have owned many. Brilliant work. Really good for vinyl because that’s the time they come from. I listen to a lot of vinyl.’
