Character.AI is entering the micro-drama arena with its own productions, but there’s a twist
There are microdramas such anger these days that almost all kinds of companies in the attention economy space – let them be dedicated micro drama programssocial media giants (TikTok and Instagram) or streaming services (Peacock, Amazon Primeand India’s JioHotstar) — creates a product to take advantage of the opportunities.
Character.AI, which lets people talk to personalized AI avatars, is also tapping into this nascent market by creating its own micro-dramas using AI characters. But there is an interesting feature that takes advantage of the company’s core product: users over the age of 18 can talk to the characters of these shows, ask them questions and even act out different storylines.
To start, the startup is launching three micro-dramas: a romance series called Last Summer, a horror show called Night Game, and a survival micro-drama similar to The Hunger Games called Fall of Eden.
Character.AI says that these dramas were created using artificial intelligence tools, and in the long term, they aim to help users create their own characters and series.
“Starting with a studio-led model, the c.ai series allows our production team to develop the format, refine the workflow and understand what audiences want from character-based microdrama entertainment. Over time, the goal is to transform these learnings and workflows into creator tools, allowing users to create their own series with original characters and share them with a global audience,” said TechCrunch representative of the company.
This is the latest in a slew of recent features from the startup since its move to entertainment oriented last year’s features. In April, he teased the tool under the name Lorebook, which users can use to create information about the creation of the world that characters can be referenced, and launched another feature called Books, which allows users to insert themselves into or role-play characters from selected classic literature titles.
On Thursday, the company said it is also testing a feature called c.ai FM, which will allow users to compose audio series, and another that allows the creation of fiction, called c.ai Reads. The audio series feature is currently available to select users as part of the c.ai Labs experimental program, which the company says is used by professional writers to create serialized audio cores.
There is certainly an audience for this form of entertainment. Users spent more than 950 minutes on Character.AI each month in the first half of 2026. Sensory tower.
