India’s struggle under Iyer
India’s new T20I era has not started as expected. After winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 earlier this year, the Men in Blue traveled to the UK under new captain Shreyas Iyer.
However, India lost both the T20Is against Ireland, with the hosts taking a historic 2-0 series win. The first T20I against England was also unsuccessful as rain washed out play in Durham after India’s innings.
India posted 189/7 with Shreyas Iyer playing a brilliant knock of 68 runs off 47 balls. He became the first Indian T20I captain to score a fifty on English soil. Among these, Vaibhav Suoryavanshi unhappy in Manchester nets as Gautam Gambhir faces heat.
Why BCCI removed Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain despite World Cup triumph
On 6 June, the BCCI reshuffled the captaincy, appointing Iyer as India’s new T20I captain, naming the squads for the tours of Ireland and England, as well as the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
โAlthough Suryakumar Yadav led India to the T20 World Cup title earlier this year, his poor performance with the bat forced the selectors to take a tough decision. After an unsuccessful campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026, his struggles continued in the IPL 2026 where he managed just 270 runs for Mumbai Indians at an average of 20.76.
The 35-year-old has not only lost his captaincy but has also been dropped from the Indian T20I squad altogether. The selection committee wanted to start a new chapter with a new captain as part of their long-term plans for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the 2028 FIFA T20 World Cup.
Shreyas Iyer’s IPL success earned him the T20I captaincy of India
Shreyas Iyer was given the captaincy after leading the way in the IPL. He led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title and later led Punjab Kings to the finals of IPL 2025. Earlier, the Mumbaikar also led Delhi Capitals to the finals of IPL 2020.
He also impressed with the bat in IPL 2026, scoring 498 runs at a strike rate of 168.81, helping him return to the Indian T20I side after a long layoff. The BCCI also appointed Thilak Varma as the vice-captain.
