But the shot did not go well. The ball caught the inside of the left-hander’s bat and flew high into the air instead of striking out the fielder. Liam Dawson, operating at short fine leg, responded brilliantly at the right moment.
Dawson raced back, keeping his eyes on the ball, and despite losing his balance, made a superb catch well above his head. With that fine catch, England sent Thilak back to the pavilion after he struck 13 in 13 balls, while Saqib Mahmood claimed another scalp in Durham.

With this dismissal, Saqib Mahmood continued his complete dominance over Tilak Varma in T20I cricket. The English fast bowler was dismissed by the left-hander for the second time in two meetings.
Tilak faced just three balls from Saqib in T20I cricket, managed to score just one run and was dismissed both times. On the other hand, Vaibhav Suaryavanshi debut imminent as Sanju Samson’s nightmare continues in 1st T20I vs ENG.
Tilak Varma’s destitute place continues
Well, the left-hander has struggled mightily in recent games. After going two-game undefeated, the left-hander hasn’t been able to consistently turn starts into big results. His inconsistency has put fresh pressure on his place in India’s middle order.
His last 10 scores read: 13, 55, 19, 48, 21, 27, 44, 1, 31 and 25. Even during IPL 2026, the Hyderabad star could not consistently deliver against Mumbai Indians. After his latest failure at Durham, fans were questioning how many opportunities Tilak would get.
However, India managed to post 189/7 on the board in their 20 overs thanks to quick fifties from skipper Shreyas Iyer (68) and Abhishek Sharma (59). Shivam Dube also made a valuable contribution with a knock of 42 off 21 balls against England in the first T20I at Durham.
