Barcelona’s wage cap issues have been well-documented over the years, with the Catalan side often having to make some painful exit decisions and lacking the financial engineering to sign players. Much of that has to do with payroll growth at the start of the decade, which continues to haunt them to this day.

At least that’s the case with veteran goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Two years ago, the 34-year-old signed a new contract with Barcelona until 2028, but after signing Joan Garcia, ter Stegen does not meet the club’s requirements. Although he is the captain, Barcelona have been looking to move him on for some time.

“Barcelona” will pay 15 million euros from the salary of ter Stegen, who played for “Ajax”.

Last season, ter Stegen headed to Girona on loan for the second half of the season in the January transfer window, but then suffered an injury just weeks into his time at Montilivi. He is due to be loaned out to Ajax this season, but they are unwilling to pay a large chunk of his huge wages. As explained by MarkBarcelona will cover around €15m (£12.94m) during the season from his wages. That equates to around 10-15% of his total wages for the year as he joins manager Michel Sanchez for the second time.

Barcelona have yet to register Anthony Gordon

Although they still have some time to work it out, Barcelona will need to secure around €16 million for Anthony Gordon’s fee and enough salary cap space for him this summer. It is likely to be around €30m (£25.88m) and Ter Stegen’s departure could help with that. The Catalan side will no doubt make a few sales this summer to ease the salary cap situation again, even if they hope to get back into the cap this summer.
