Tehran has accused Ukraine of attacking an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, resulting in an explosion that killed one sailor and wounded another.<\/p>\n

Iran’s foreign ministry summoned Ukraine’s charg\u00e9 d’affaires in Tehran to protest what it called a “hostile and criminal” attack on Saturday, state news agency IRNA reported.<\/p>\n

The ministry said the attack was recognized by the Ukrainian leadership and said it reflected Kiev’s “irrational and hostile approach” to Iran. He warned that Iran will defend its national interests.<\/p>\n

He also described the incident as a violation of Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter and said it could further inflame and expand the Russian-Ukrainian war.<\/p>\n

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also discussed the issue in a telephone conversation with the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaya Kallas, his office said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Oragchi strongly condemned Ukraine’s military attack on a ship in the Caspian Sea and reportedly “called for a firm response from the United Nations Security Council, the European Union and the international community, as well as for the perpetrators and supporters of this criminal act to be brought to justice,” according to a statement published on Telegram.<\/p>\n

“The Iranians are not very happy (about the attack) while they are also dealing with the US blockade on the southern coast,” Al Jazeera’s Tohid Asadi said, reporting from Tehran.<\/p>\n

He explained that attacks on Iran’s northern coast “put additional pressure” on Iran’s maritime trade.<\/p>\n

In its condemnation, the Iranian Foreign Ministry again stated that Tehran has never intervened in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in a message on X that Kyiv had achieved “very strong results” with long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea, hitting “vessels used to transport military cargo involving Iran, as well as a warship.” It did not identify the merchant vessel named by Tehran as a target.<\/p>\n

Zelensky separately claimed that Russia had transferred satellite images of the Persian Gulf countries and US military facilities to Iran. According to him, the surveillance on July 19 and 20 covered air bases in Bahrain, Jordan and Kuwait.<\/p>\n

Iran and Ukraine have been at odds since 2022, when Iran sold Shahed drones to Russia, which Moscow has since adapted and launched by the thousands into Ukrainian cities.<\/p>\n

Kyiv says that he was beaten more than 44 thousand<\/a> drones of Iranian development after the invasion of Russia.<\/p>\n
