Japan<\/a>Government data released on Friday showed core inflation was 1.6% in June as higher oil prices weighed on the broader economy. <\/p>\n

It was the first rise in core inflation since March and was in line with the 1.6% rise expected by economists polled by Reuters. Core inflation in Japan is driving down prices for fresh produce. <\/p>\n

Headline inflation rose to 1.7% from 1.5% in May, while so-called “core” inflation, which excludes fresh food and energy prices, fell to 1.7%, the lowest level since August 2022. <\/p>\n

Thanks to government subsidies, energy prices fell by just 0.1% year-on-year in June, compared with a 2.5% drop in May. Fuel, electricity and water bills remained flat, ending 6 consecutive months of decline. <\/p>\n

While Japan has issued subsidies to cushion the impact of a global energy price spike on consumers, businesses have experienced a sharp rise in costs due to price spikes, with producer price index for June<\/a> reaching 7.1%, the highest level since March 2023.<\/p>\n
