This film is the latest adaptation of the ancient Greek text about a soldier trying to find his way home after helping win a costly battle. In particular, Odysseus helped end the Trojan War, which is ironic when you think about it. After all, the success of this fictional story may have finally ended the conflict in the real world. Namely, the endless culture wars waged by the most daring keyboard warriors this side of 4chan.

For months now, all the usual suspects have been lamenting Nolan’s choice. This included Lupita Nyong’o playing Helen of Troy and having Elliot Page play Sinon, a Greek warrior. After seeing (gasp!) a black woman and a trans man playing Greek characters, haters started screaming that the movie was trash that would wake up the box office. This, of course, is the conventional wisdom of the old adage: “woke, broke.” however, Odysseus grossed a whopping $264.1 million in its opening weekend, teaching a lesson everyone should learn. A lesson? One of the life lessons I try to pass on to all my students is that there is no such thing as normal; there is only what has been normalized around you. Are you in a room with nothing but flat earth? In such a scenario, you would considered insane. After a while, you might even start to believe what they say. It’s just human nature … everyone wants to fit in, not be an outcast. After all, it becomes easier to drink the Kool-Aid of stupid groupthink than to speak the truth to a bunch of idiots.

What is it connected with Odysseus? everythingindeed. Despite once clinging to the “facts don’t hurt your feelings” mantra, conservatives who predicted the film would be a bombshell had no real data to suggest it would; instead, they just felt rancid atmospheres as everyone in their favorite virtual spaces insisted that the film was going to flop. This is a practical example of the flat earth example above. You can only hear most people in your favorite internet groups predicting doom for so long before those predictions seem inevitable. No one wants to question the narrative because that’s the fastest way to get kicked out of the group.

The internet is not real life

Now success Odysseus (it amounted to more than a quarter of a billion dollars in the first weekend!) destroyed this narrative on his own. What did that do to the skeptics who predicted his doom? Some have retreated to conspiracy theories; millionaires must be buying up empty theaters! The film is successful only because it pandered to the awakened elite! It makes money only on previous sales! Expensive IMAX tickets inflated the numbers! These are just a few conspiracies spread by unruly lunatics who cannot understand Odysseus to be popular and successful. Their narrative fell apart, confirming it once and for all The internet is not real life.

Regardless of political affiliation, every online group you join has its own biases on countless topics. This includes what is awakened or not awakened. But part of being an adult is realizing that the opinions of these groups do not reflect the broader culture any more than the opinions of your childhood friends reflect the opinions of everyone in your hometown. If you and your friends hate the new bar, but it gets more crowded every month, then most people clearly like it. The fact that the movie is doing gangsters at the box office is proof that most people going to see it don’t care about politics or military culture.
