The group had built convincing fake police websites, and the coins were immediately stolen and funneled through a complex laundering network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">At Southwark Crown Court on Thursday, Anthony Ikenwe, 29, and Kevin Nwamma, 25, were each sentenced to six years for conspiracy to commit fraud and five years for money laundering, to run concurrently. One had a recorded income of just \u00a3444 a year, yet the group bought a car worth almost \u00a360,000 with crypto, kept around \u00a3500,000 in cash in a safety deposit box in Dubai, and holidayed in Thailand, Japan, Paris, Mykonos, the Maldives and the Seychelles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">They shopped at Harrods, Herm\u00e8s and Louis Vuitton and routinely converted crypto into prepaid payment cards, according to the Met. Officers linked more than \u00a31 million in crypto to wallets controlled by Ikenwe, and traced stolen funds flowing into bank accounts tied to Nwamma&#8217;s luxury chauffeur business. Luxury goods recovered in the searches were valued at more than \u00a326,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The case began when victims came forward in January 2025. The Met&#8217;s Cryptocurrency Team said it used a data-driven approach\u2014piecing together blockchain transactions, exchange records, communications, financial records and internet service provider data\u2014to link what first looked like separate crimes into a single organized network operating across multiple platforms and jurisdictions.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border:0\" src=\"https:\/\/myriad.markets\/embed\/market\/btc-next-move-pump-to-84k-or-dump-to-55k-3d262902-135d-416e-90bc-8e80233f341e\" width=\"100%\" height=\"415px\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display:inline-block;width:0px;overflow:hidden;line-height:0\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">&#8220;This was a highly complex investigation into a group of calculated manipulators who exploited victims&#8217; trust by pretending to be police officers,&#8221; said Detective Inspector Geoff Donoghue of the force&#8217;s Cryptocurrency Team, adding that, &#8220;Criminals should be under no illusion\u2014policing is evolving alongside technology.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">In November, officers raided seven addresses across London and Essex, arresting the three men and seizing luxury goods, cryptocurrency and 40 mobile phones. They recovered around \u00a31 million tied to victims. Ikenwe and Nwamma pleaded guilty in April, while Bashir denied involvement and stood trial, changing his plea on the eighth day after being shown extensive evidence.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sc-b2a202e4-2 bmropA gg-dark:text-white scene:font-itc-avant-garde-gothic-pro scene:font-light\" style=\"margin-top:2em;text-align:left;padding-bottom:16px;margin-bottom:16px;border-bottom:1px solid #dfe2e4\" color=\"#333\">Posing as the authorities<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Impersonating police has become a recurring thread in crypto crime. The closest parallel to the Met case came last year, when a <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/336043\/scammer-poses-as-uk-police-steals-2-8m-in-bitcoin-from-hardware-wallet\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">scammer posing as UK police<\/a> stole $2.8 million in Bitcoin from a victim&#8217;s hardware wallet. In the US, fraudsters posing as Denver police <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/289864\/colorado-resident-scammed-out-of-thousands-in-bitcoin-by-fake-jury-duty-call\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">convinced a woman<\/a> she had missed jury duty, then had her feed cash into a Bitcoin ATM to clear a bogus warrant\u2014one of a wave of impersonation scams the FBI says has <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/316090\/elderly-americans-hit-hardest-by-9-3b-crypto-scam-wave-in-2024-fbi\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">hit older Americans hardest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Sometimes the fake officers turn up in person.
