Strip that out, and the picture is much less stark: Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, printed for the month at an annual rate of 2.6%, versus a forecast of 2.9%. Services ex-energy were flat; shelter increased by 0.1%; transport services decreased by 0.3%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This distinction is directly relevant to Federal Reserve policy because policymakers focus on core inflation and services inflation as a long-term signal.
