Surprisingly, a lot has changed for the Men in Blue in recent months, most notably the promotion of Shreyas Iyer to the captaincy role and Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s first call-up to the national team.

For a team blessed with a plethora of first strikes, the management did face a bit of a stutter when it came to the starting line-up in the build-up to the World Cup. Though Abhishek Sharma was locked in for a while, India tested various options like Sanju Samson, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan before landing where they started.

The headache of choice shows no sign of abating as the debate begins again, perhaps even louder than before because the candidate in question is a teenage prospect, Vaibhav Suryavanshi. With a combination involving all three of them highly unlikely, as it involves players going down or hitting out of position, the team management has no choice but to gradually rotate the three players and select their best pairing.

<template id="also-read-articles-template">

</template>

On that note, let’s look at three starting combinations Team India can be tried during Ireland and England 2026 T20Is.

#1 Sanju Samson-Abhishek Sharma

There are several good reasons for the current pairing to continue at multiple levels, and team management will likely stick with that route for now. First, it is this left-arm-right-arm combination that may have led India to the 2026 World T20 title. It was Samson’s re-introduction into the playing eleven at the top that served as the catalyst for the campaign’s famous knockout stages.

Second, their record speaks for itself. The pair was launched together soon after the 2024 FIFA World Cup T20 and since then they have consistently produced high scores. Even individually, the pair haven’t slowed down, having recently had a solid campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Another aspect worth noting is the chemistry between the pair and how they complement each other. Of all the opening partners that Abhishek Sharma has had in the past 18 months, it would be hard to argue that anyone has had better chemistry with him than Sanju Samson.

It would be to separate the couple just to accommodate Vaibhav Suryavansha a hasty decision. The current duo still have a lot to offer and their experience and chemistry together will prove vital in the run-up to the next T20 World Cup.

#2 Abhishek Sharma-Vaibhav Suryavanshi

The destructive opening pair that is being heavily marketed and touted as a long-term pairing for India in T20Is is the young duo of Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Suryavanshi. It will be tempting to let loose the teenager, who has built momentum after a blockbuster IPL 2026 season and a solid tri-series with India A.

There’s no doubting the havoc this pair can wreak purely on ability and potential. In theory, there might not be a better pair that could make the most of the hunting restrictions. With Sanju Samson turning 32 in a few months, prone to dips in form and Ishan Kishan as an alternative wicket-keeper candidate, the team management can afford the luxury of shifting Vaibhav Suryavanshi to Abhishek Sharma’s side.

However, it is worth noting that the last time India went full steam ahead with a similar mindset, their ambitious left-arm combination plan was consistently used off the backs.

#3 Sanju Samson-Vaibhav Suryavanshi

If the team management wants to throw Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the deep right away and has reservations about having two left-handers at the top as mentioned above, they may have to sacrifice Abhishek Sharma as an opener.

Although Abhishek Sharma is still the top ranked T20I batsman, he has not had the best of years. His all-or-nothing comeback this year resulted in 323 runs in 13 matches at an average of 26.92.

It is also a tough task to open the innings with Vaibhav Suryavanshi as the natural approach, especially for young batsmen, would be to try to match him with the risk value of his natural game and put himself under pressure. Yashaswi Jaiswal fell victim to the same during IPL 2026 and Abhishek Sharma could potentially fall into the trap as well, especially at a time when he is already a bit under-pumped after a dip in form in India.

In that case, the best case scenario for all parties involved might be to have a much more mature and experienced opener in the form of Sanju Samson. Team India will keep their left-right pair intact, with Samson and Suryavanshi batting in their preferred position and the latter can also benefit from a calm influence at the other end.

<template id="post-rating-feedback-modal-template">

Why didn’t you like this content?

Cancel
Submit

</template>

Was this article helpful?

Thanks for the feedback

Quick links

More from Sportskeeda

Edited by Gokul Nair

Team India is set for their first T20I assignment after winning the T20 World Cup 2026 earlier this year and it will be a challenging tour of Ireland and England.
