The series centers on the only human in the galaxy, John Crichton (Ben Browder), but the ensemble cast has made it a fan favorite for nearly 30 years and counting. However, one of them, the madman Stark (Paul Goddard), is considered the worst of them all. He&#8217;s not meant to be liked, but then again, it feels like the writers have forgotten over time that his insanity is supposed to be an act, not a major character trait. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stark-s-insanity-was-supposed-to-be-fake-ish\"><strong>Stark&#8217;s madness had to be a fake\u2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Farscape-Stark-900x506.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-649966\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Farscape-Stark-900x506.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Farscape-Stark-578x325.jpg 578w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Farscape-Stark-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Farscape-Stark-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Farscape-Stark-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Farscape-Stark.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>A character trait that goes from one striking personality trait to becoming more obtuse and unremarkable over time is called &#8220;Flanderization&#8221; after Ned Flanders on <em><a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/topic\/the-simpsons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"The Simpsons\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"215855\">The Simpsons<\/a><\/em>. Flanders started out as the complete opposite of Homer Simpson, but over time his religious traits became more prominent, overpowering everything else. This is the case with Stark, who had some funny moments when he was going crazy in a prison cell with Crichton: \u201cMy side, your side! My side, your side!\u201d, but in season 3 became a completely different character. <\/p>\n<p>Stark has a fascinating background with his prominent metal mask that hides his true nature: lift the mask and it reveals the pure energy that Stark uses to help people alleviate their suffering, including &#8220;crossing over&#8221; to the other side. In the process, they leave with it a part of their soul that includes knowledge and emotions. No wonder he is unbalanced. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stark-got-worse-every-season\"><strong>Stark got worse every season<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Farscape-Stark-900x506.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-746639\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Farscape-Stark-900x506.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Farscape-Stark-578x325.jpg 578w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Farscape-Stark-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Farscape-Stark-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Farscape-Stark.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The problem is, in his first appearance, Stark admits to Crichton that he&#8217;s pretending to be crazy to save <a href=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/?s=farscape\">Scorpion<\/a> (Wayne Pigram) has no interest in him. Stark was even able to create a key to escape the cell deep inside the secret Peacekeeper base. Compare that to Season 3 and they&#8217;re almost two different characters. <\/p>\n<p>After the death of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/ent\/scifi\/virginia-hey-sick.html\">Jean<\/a> in Season 3, Stark loosens up a lot. His once cute jail cell rant has become a regular cadence as he says, &#8220;You&#8217;re dead. I&#8217;m dead. You&#8217;re dead. I&#8217;m dead,&#8221; &#8220;Time&#8217;s up. Game on. Good luck.&#8221; He has moments of clarity, but generally when he&#8217;s on screen, he&#8217;s screaming. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-willing-to-doom-the-universe-for-religion\"><strong>Willingness to destroy the universe for the sake of religion<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Farscape-Stark-1-900x506.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-746640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Farscape-Stark-1-900x506.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Farscape-Stark-1-578x325.jpg 578w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Farscape-Stark-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Farscape-Stark-1-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Farscape-Stark-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>During <em>Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars<\/em>Stark, like Flanders, holds so strongly to his religious beliefs that he is willing to destroy the universe because of them. When the last wielder of Eidelon&#8217;s power dies, Stark does not help him cross over and thus acquires a part of his soul that contains ancient teachings. It&#8217;s on the same level as Star Lord messing with removal <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/topic\/Thanos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Thanos\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"215856\">Thanos<\/a> gauntlet, except at this point, Crichton and Erin Sun are able to convince him to do the right thing. <\/p>\n<p><em>Farscape<\/em> is an exceptionally well-written series with strong characterizations throughout that for the most part avoids the trap of one-note characters. Even the Pilot has a tragic background. Although Stark appears every season, he changes over time, and his final moment is more of a relief than a triumph. Jule develops and changes more over time, in a positive way, that is, than Stark, and is the second most hated member of the team.
