Movies on motives <em>The original series<\/em> established a strange pattern where the odd-numbered films were weaker and the even-numbered films stronger. Motion picture was slow and heavy, for example, at that time <em>Wrath of the Khan<\/em> was exciting and eventful. As for the TNG crew movies, <em>Generations<\/em> was a jagged, nostalgic mess at the time <em>First contact<\/em> was an unqualified hit. If <em>Rebellion<\/em> turned out to be nothing more than a prolonged episode <em>The next generation<\/em>fans consoled themselves that the next even-numbered film would blow us all away.<\/p>\n<p>unfortunately <em><a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/topic\/star-trek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Star Trek\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"212430\">Star Trek<\/a>: Nemesis<\/em> was the train wreck that brought the TNG movies to a screeching halt and nearly killed the franchise. Now, almost a quarter of a century later, fans are still debating where this ambitious film (Picard fights an evil clone played by Tom Hardy!) went wrong. However, we need not wonder anymore. It&#8217;s not designed to be a Star Trek podcast, but they both continue to host guests from the franchise that made them both famous. In a recent episode, they hosted Ron Perlman <em><a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/topic\/hellboy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Hellboy\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"212426\">Hellboy<\/a><\/em>    an actor who performed in <em>Star Trek: Nemesis<\/em> like a creepy Rehman. One day the conversation turned to <em>Nemesis<\/em>Perlman pulled no punches about director Stewart Byrd, someone he said <em>Star Trek: Nemesis<\/em> the actors agreed that he &#8220;didn&#8217;t have any people skills.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Afterward, Perlman kept going, stating that Baird &#8220;wasn&#8217;t a director, he was an editor to whom the studio owed a favor.&#8221; Elaborating, Perlman claimed that Baird &#8220;rescued a lot of their turkeys. They would bring him in when they had a turkey and he would cut it up and make it look. So he was a very talented editor, but he wasn&#8217;t a director. . . . He&#8217;s not a director.&#8221; This refers to the fact that Baird was a well-known editor who previously worked on such fan-favorite films as <em>A deadly weapon<\/em> and the original <em>Superman<\/em>. It&#8217;s really fair: Baird might have been the worst choice to direct <em>Nemesis<\/em>but his killer work editing some of the coolest franchises in the world has earned him a place in the geek hall of fame. Frakes was more direct in his criticism, noting that Baird rejected offers of advice from himself and <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/topic\/patrick-stewart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Patrick Stewart\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"212431\">Patrick Stewart<\/a> &#8220;because we made 182 episodes and three movies together.&#8221; However, the director &#8220;was not at all interested in talking to us about how we spin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Almost everyone in the room agreed that Baird was a very talented editor. However, Ron Perlman was convinced that getting the job from such an inexperienced director showed that <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/topic\/paramount-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Paramount+\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"212429\">First priority<\/a> had <strong>no respect<\/strong> for <em>Star Trek: Nemesis<\/em> or the skills needed to bring this film to life. &#8220;(It&#8217;s) an attitude, like, &#8216;anyone can do it, you know, let&#8217;s just give it to that guy.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-i-m-sensing-a-terrible-director-captain\"><strong>I sense a terrible headmaster, Captain<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/riker-troi-nemesis-900x506.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-626780\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/riker-troi-nemesis-900x506.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/riker-troi-nemesis-578x325.jpg 578w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/riker-troi-nemesis-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/riker-troi-nemesis-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/riker-troi-nemesis-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/riker-troi-nemesis-1568x882.jpg 1568w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/riker-troi-nemesis-1320x743.jpg 1320w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/riker-troi-nemesis-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/riker-troi-nemesis.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>No matter who you blame <em>Nemesis<\/em> was possibly the worst Star Trek movie ever. Its critical and commercial failure marked the end of films featuring the actor <em>The next generation<\/em> the crew When the franchise returned, it was in form <em>Star Trek<\/em> (2009), a complete reboot <em>The original series<\/em>. Ironically, this film also featured the Enterprise fighting an advanced Romulan warship led by a bald, charismatic commander. This kind of creative theft might make you think <a href=\"https:\/\/www.giantfreakinrobot.com\/ent\/scifi\/jj-abrams-talks-approach-star-wars-episode-vii-2.html\">JJ Abrams<\/a> (<em>Hiking<\/em>film director) was once a very good director. But at least he&#8217;s a good editor, right?<\/p>\n<p>I mean the one who forgot to take off all those glares. Oh, and forgot to do <em>The Rise of Skywalker<\/em> make some sense.
