To Denis Villeneuve climbed aboard as the next James Bond director, another intriguing project lay in his potential to-do pile: adaptation Nuclear War: The Scenario, Annie Jacobsen2024 is a book that uses extensive interviews and research to examine minute by minute what would happen if nuclear war broke out. Her latest book is in the same vein; it is under the title Biological warfare: the scenarioand although it was only released today, it has already been primed for adaptation.
Diversity reports that Patrick McManus (creator of Peacock’s Devil in Masks: John Wayne Gacy) secured the television adaptation rights for his production company; he and Jacobsen will create and serve as executive producers Biological warfare.
The book takes a close look at the seconds, minutes, hours and days after the release of a microscopic agent that could wipe out civilization if allowed to spread across the globe. And this is a weapon that is not similar StandCaptain Trips, so presumably the show will also include a heavy government-military aspect.
“What starts as a normal day, six days later leads to the end of the world,” McMamus told Variety. “But ultimately, it’s not a nihilistic show. It is. There’s dark excitement and an exploration of the apocalypse. But there’s a parallel story about the instinct to protect and rebuild. A celebration of community and family. Fulfilling the desire to start the human experiment all over again in the hope that this time it’ll be right.”
A Variety piece mentions a potential Villeneuve adaptation Nuclear warso maybe we will see it on the screens too. No streamer or network blocked for Biological warfarebut the trade writes that “a TV adaptation will be presented to buyers in the coming weeks.”
