Faced with AI content, profiles and scum, Meta hopes for something new Facebook verified the program will help people interact with other people. Based on a facial recognition selfie matched against your existing profile photos, the company says the process will take just a few minutes.
It’s interesting that Meta decided to use facial recognition with the latter in mind legal calculations and the fight is over face recognition in smart glasses. To be eligible, you must be over 18 and in “good standing” according to Facebook’s community standards.
After you pass the test, your verified badge will appear on Marketplace, Dating, and other parts of Facebook’s sites and services. The big difference between this and the old Facebook icon is that it’s just a verification of identity, not an endorsement by Facebook or any guarantee of their trustworthiness. Unlike Meta-verifiedit’s completely free.
The feature comes amid a wave of fraudsters and criminals using generative AI tools to create and use fake profiles with realistic profile pictures, photos and previous stories capable of sending automated messages at scale. This is Meta’s attempt to somewhat protect its users from fraud and scams.
It is part of several Facebook announcements made this morning, including a new push into “immersion video” (aka the pursuit of TikTok). He teased a “reimagined experience” that will test full-screen videos for a portion of users “the moment they open the app.” Perhaps learning from aggressive changes to the core FB experience in the past, Meta says users will have the option to opt out and return to the typical Feed First interface if they choose.
The feature won’t be available for Pages or ProMode accounts and will roll out gradually to Facebook starting Monday, “starting in select markets with plans to expand globally.”
