TLC’s Jen Arnold reacts to Jesse Ridgway’s abortion controversy

A small couple alum Jen Arnold weighs in after the influencer Jesse Ridgwaywife Ashley Ridgway, terminated the pregnancy after being diagnosed with Down syndrome.

“Prenatal counseling has become one of the most important areas of modern perinatal medicine,” Arnold, 52, wrote via Instagram on Friday, June 12. “The goal of prenatal counseling is not to guide families toward a decision, but to help them make it with clarity and support.”

Arnold works as a neonatologist, where she often holds prenatal consultations to tell parents about unexpected pregnancy complications.

“As our ability to diagnose fetal conditions expands—and as fetal interventions and prenatal care continue to evolve—families need more than just information,” she explained. “They need careful, compassionate, non-directive guidance that helps them understand prognosis, uncertainty, and options in a patient- and family-centered way.”

YouTuber Jesse Ridgway has dismissed conspiracy theories after sharing that he and his wife Ashley made the “difficult decision” to terminate her pregnancy after the fetus was diagnosed with Down syndrome. “You can’t even keep your stories true, it’s crazy,” Jesse, 33, wrote in a statement shared via his Instagram Stories and account X (…)

Arnold continued, “As a neonatologist and a person with a disability, I believe these conversations must also include the dignity and lived experience of people with disabilities. Better prenatal medicine should mean better support and better counseling—not more fear, not language that implies that some lives are less worth living. As fetal medicine evolves, so does our ethical responsibility for balance and humility.”

Jesse, 33, announced earlier this month that his wife, 31, recently had an abortion.

“My wife and I made the very difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy due to trisomy 21,” he wrote in a statement on social media, noting that the fetus was diagnosed with Down syndrome. “The choice was not made lightly. … I know some of you may be very disappointed to hear this news. We are devastated. This has been very traumatic for both of us, especially Ashley.”

At the time, Jesse added: “We’ve made a difficult decision that we believe will be good for our family in the long run. Fortunately, we had a choice. It’s going to take some time to move on, but we’re excited to try again in the future and hopefully have a better outcome.”

Jesse Ridgway and his wife Ashley Ridgway have found themselves at the center of controversy after making the “difficult decision to terminate” her pregnancy after being diagnosed with Down syndrome in the fetus. “We were so excited to celebrate with you the gender reveal in the Psycho video, but in true ‘art imitates life’ fashion…was (…)

Jesse and Ashley’s decision caused a wide reaction on the Internet.

“(This conversation) requires honesty and consideration,” Arnold, who lives with skeletal dysplasia, said Friday. “A prenatal diagnosis of trisomy 21 … can bring fear, uncertainty and many questions for expectant parents. Families deserve clear, compassionate and non-directive counseling as they make very personal decisions.”

Arnold also clapped back at online comments suggesting that people with Down syndrome have “less meaningful” lives.

“People with Down syndrome are not diagnoses, they are people,” she stated. “Their lives are full of relationships, joy, challenges, dignity, humanity, just like everyone else’s.”
